How seats are counted

A seat is a person who can publish. Who uses one, who never does, and what the number on your billing page means.

A seat is a person who can connect an agent and publish to the workspace. That is the only thing a seat is. Every price on the pricing page is "so much, including so many seats, then so much a seat", and this page is what the word means.

Who uses a seat

  • Owner, admin, member — yes. Each can publish.
  • Viewer — no. Cannot connect an agent or publish. Opens, comments, submits data, joins live rooms.
  • An agent — never. One builder connects as many agents as they like.
  • A visitor to a public artifact — no. Not in the workspace at all.
  • Someone you shared one artifact with by email — no. Named sharing is per artifact, not membership.

So "6 of 8 seats" on a billing page means six people who can publish, out of eight paid for. Viewers are listed beside it with the word free, and they can be any number.

Pending invitations

On Team, an invitation holds no seat until it is accepted. You can have invitations out for more people than you have seats; the seat is added, prorated, on the day each person accepts. To stop a workspace from sending unbounded invitations, pending ones are capped at twice the seat count.

On Business, an invitation holds a seat from the moment it is sent, because seats are purchased in advance and an invitation that could not be honoured is worse than one that waits. Withdraw it and the seat is free again.

What the number on the billing page is

Team: seats follow membership. Accept an invitation and the count goes up by one, prorated for the rest of the month; remove a member and the next invoice is credited. The stepper on the billing page only reserves seats ahead of invitations — it cannot go below the people already here, and it is never needed.

Business: seats are purchased. The count is a hard cap: an invitation that would exceed it is refused with the two ways out. Buy more at any time, prorated for the rest of the term. At renewal the invoice stays at the seats you bought, unless there are more builders than that, in which case it bills for the builders. The billing page previews the renewal figure.

The arithmetic

Team is $39 a month for five seats and $8 for each one after that, so a team of eight pays:

$39 + 3 × $8 = $63 a month

Yearly is ten months for twelve — $390 plus $80 a seat — so the same team pays:

$390 + 3 × $80 = $630 a year

Business is $299 a month for twenty-five seats and $10 for each after, or $2,990 and $100 yearly. Forty seats for a year:

$2,990 + 15 × $100 = $4,490 a year

Three people who each want to publish could also each take Solo at $20, which is $60 a month for three separate workspaces with nothing pooled. Team's three-seat minimum costs $39 for one workspace with everything pooled and two seats to spare. The pricing card does this sum for whatever number you type, and How Team and Business pricing works has it for 5 to 100 builders.

Minimums and maximums

  • Free and Solo: one builder. A workspace that already had several members when Team launched keeps them; adding more needs Team.
  • Team: 3 to 25 builders. Five are included in the price; you can have fewer than five and still pay the base price.
  • Business: 25 to 200 builders. Past 200 is Enterprise.

What a seat is not

A seat is not a login. A viewer signs in like anyone else. A seat is not a licence to a product; the subscription belongs to the workspace, and a person who leaves gives their seat back. And a seat on a team does not upgrade your personal workspace, which stays on its own plan.
